Alternative Fuels: The Path to the Rise of China’s Automotive Industry

The combined total of vehicles produced and sold in China will reach 10 million in 2009, and it is estimated that the country will possess 150 million road-worthy vehicles by 2020.

“Save energy and reduce emissions” is China’s national policy as well as a long-term global trend. This means that low-emission vehicles based on new fuels are the new “direction”—and one that represents a propitious opportunity for the rapid rise of China’s automobile industry.

In terms of industry structure, the horizontal division of labor is gaining popularity in the automobile manufacturing industry, especially in R&D for low-emissions, low-cost cars. For alternative-fuel vehicles, the proportion of total vehicle cost accounted for by electronics systems is rising day by day, and the mainstream model of horizontal division of labor in the electronics industry is therefore becoming “embedded” in the car industry. All of this is creating the necessary conditions for the rise of China’s automotive industry and electronics manufacturers.

Additionally, in terms of brand development, the horizontal division of labor model provides a basis for the concurrent development of both key components and finished vehicles, as well as the search for individualized solutions. The model creates the necessary conditions for the large-scale economical production and distribution of parts, and creates a market for specialized design houses, thereby greatly shortening the product development cycle and aiding brand name development.

Alternative-fuel vehicles represent an even bigger opportunity for the electronics industry. While electronics technology accounts for 20-30% of the cost of a traditional vehicle, it can represent 60% or more for an electric or hybrid car. If we consider alternative-fuel vehicles as a historical opportunity for the China automotive industry, that assumes that right from the outset China will earnestly cultivate its own home-grown automotive electronics industry.

The only way for China’s automotive electronics sector to develop itself is via competition. Currently, world-class makers of finished vehicles and the electronics systems they incorporate are all jostling to position themselves within China, in the hopes of getting their share of this mammoth market. Alternative-fuel vehicles are in their initial phase, and there will be a pressing need to integrate resources across international borders and to seek help in establishing a supply chain.

As China’s most important automotive base, Shanghai offers global players the ideal platform for establishing themselves in this marketplace.
